Renault Grand Scenic mk2, Scenic 1.6 petrol, 16V, oil change guide

Hi all.
On today's post I will show you how to change an engine oil in Renault Scenic.

As usually detailed pictures will be used in this post.

Many different car manufactures recommend to change engine oil every 10-30 thousand kilometers.
Of course if you are driving car from home to work and do not do long distances then oil should be changed more often. Not many of car users know, that the main and worst moment of using their car, is the moment when they start their engine. For the first few moments engine runs without oil. The friction is dry and there is "metal to metal" rubbing. Why?
Because oil pump takes drive from engine, it does not work independently. Another reason is that the oil goes to sump from entire engine after is has been stopped. Of course it takes some time until entire oil gets there.

So basically the more often you start your engine the more used it become. More micro peels are in the engine oil and run thorough the oiling system. Although there is filter and sump drain plug is usually magnetic (small metal pieces are attracted to plug) you will never have the oil free of them.

It is worth mentioning, that every oil has special ingredients. Few most important between them are detergent agents, anti-foam agents and anti-corrosive agents.

As I have learned in my high school, once warmed oil to it working temperature, activates all of additives, and those are active for only up to 1 year. It does not matter if you put brand new oil to your engine and drive the car for 1 time in entire year. The oil is used and has to be changed - additives are not active anymore.

Brand new oil filter. It is wort to spend few euro more for high quality one.

You have to remove that silver plastic panel covering engine
 Remove  top up oil cap

 Locate the oil filter
In Renault you have to use square head oil key to remove oil sump drain plug

If you are not 100%sure where is the plug, just follow in straight line down the engine in direction of dipstick.

I always use 5l bottle after drinking water
Be careful with removing plug. If it falls into the bottle...

 Turn anti-clockwise
Before you will put the plug back clean it and apply a new washer.

This picture will give an idea which way oil goes to and from the filter
Do not forget to put some oil all over the seal on the filter.
Topping up time. For this engine 1.6 16V you will need 4.8l of oil including filter.

After all I suggest you to start your engine and rev it to 4-5000rpm. At this time the oil pump gives the highest oil pressure. Proceed for few second, let say 10. Then stop the engine and check for leaks under the filter and from the drain plug.

Don't forget to recycle your oil. You may bring it to any car garage. DO NOT BIN IT !!! It is poisoning and toxic.

Thanks!

  1. Good instructions. How do you re-set the 'change oil soon' on the instrument panel? I think you hold in the button that you use to change the display?

    1. Hi
Yes. You'll have to press and hold it on "next service" information until it change for 30 000 km (in my case)

  2. Hi
Which button is that? is it the one that I am using to re-set time or the one that I am scrolling to check the next service or the information to refill the petrol?

  6. its only 2 days old, i filled it but forgot to replace the sump plug washer. the digital oil reading told me i had lost a little during the night. so i got a new washer and changed it out without losing alot of oil. topped it back up but i have put to much in, digital reader is saying oil level fine but oil is reading about 1 inch up the dip stick past the max mark

  7. then it is absolutely fine. the oil you'll drain is good only for 1 year as you warmed it up in your engine and all additives are activated. so it's good for topping up but not for keeping it till next oil change.
    thanks

  9. hi, cant get reliable garages around here, just had an oil change about 2 weeks ago, and noticed oil leaks on path, checked car and found oils which seams to be originating from top of engine and going down side of engine gearbox side, 'I've checked oil levels now, and it is fine, will keep an eye on it, but would any excess have damaged my engine???

  10. You need to keep oil at correct level. Otherwise you may seize your engine (in the worst scenario). Try to remove plastic cover on top of the engine and browse there for the leak.
    Thanks

    1. Ask your local part supplier they may help, alternately you may pop in to scrap yard and pick up few from over there and compare to dipstick you have. the easiest and cheapest option
